’ renders as a "y" with an umlat instead of as an apostrophe.
Build 2001122108 / Linux-Mandrake 8.1

Local testing (on my workstation) shows that ’ works fine, but it does not
at http://alistapart.com
I am trying to figure out why. I'll post if I can dig anything up.

ok, this seems to happen when using georgia or arial font families. Perhaps
more. Please examine http://members.evolt.org/bheerssen/apostrophe.html for a
demonstration.
Incidentally, I have noticed the same behaviour on windows platforms also.

I am seeing what is noted in comment 2 on Linux (Debian, Woody with self
compiled 2.4.18 kernel) with both the 1.0.0 release as well as the 1.1.alpha
release (build ID 2002061108). I've tried messing with my font settings quite a
bit with no success. Times, Arial, whatever I get apostrophe's that render as
'Y-umlat'. http://www.apple.com/mpeg4/ is another example where I see
"Tomorrow's Media Today" (and other plurals) rendered as "Tomorrow’s Media
Today". On the Apple page it is actually character 146 (’), while I have an
e-mail in my Inbox that uses character 8217 (’)
One desk over from me a Debian Mozilla package (with anti-aliased fonts) doesn't
show this symptom, indeed can not be produced at all.

Here is my own temporary work around. Looking at what Debian installs I add
some settings to my prefs (via user.js) to force anti-aliased fonts to turn on.
Now I can select "Agfa monotype*" fonts. Using the same fonts as before + AA
and the (sort of) apostrophe character renders as expected.

what a hack. I have not touch mozilla code for 2 years. I didn't read these bugs
for 2 years. And they are still there. Just close them as won't fix to clean up.

Hello
Let me confirm this error message but only reduced to the title-tag http://awasteofwords.com/
Here the ⋅-character will be shown as a rectangle (non printable char).
Best regards
